Dictionary games

Dictionary games.

The so-called dictionary games are very popular and willingly undertaken by children. They not only enrich and develop speech, excellent auditory analysis, but they also organize the information possessed by the child, they teach logical thinking, they exercise their reflexes. Only two people can participate: adult and child, but they are also suitable for carrying out in a larger group. Their undoubted advantage is this, that can be organized anywhere: while walking and traveling, in the dental waiting room, on a bus or tram, and also then, when our child visits several peers. The degree of their difficulty is easy to adapt to the level of children's knowledge. Here are some examples of games, in which the six-year-old will be happy to participate.

What's in the room?

This is one of the easiest dictionary games. We exchange alternately – once a child, once an adult – items, that are in the room. If several children participate in the game, before we start, let's establish the order, where everyone will vote. In situation, when a child delays an answer, the others start counting out loud to ten (an adult helps), if it does not mention any name within that time, gives a con or drops out of further play (this variant can be used with a larger assembly). Also, for repeating a previously mentioned name, the child gives a prize or withdraws from the game.

After some time, we change the subject and, for example, the children exchange, what grows in the garden, what can be bought at the grocery store, paper or vegetables.

Who knows more?

Another type of dictionary game is listing words that start with a certain letter. The game proceeds in the same way, as before. As a result, we determine, who knows and can name more words with a given letter.

On the occasion of this fun, we can enrich the child's vocabulary, making them more difficult, less frequently used words in colloquial speech. Because, for example, when listing words beginning with the letter l, the child will name such objects, how: doll, lamp, lollypop, list, mirror, flashlight, and an adult will use more difficult words: card, land, legend, soul, lesson, soldering iron and will of course explain their meaning, when the child asks for it.

And just like in the previous game, ten, who can't say the next word quickly, will repeat the already mentioned, or starting with a different letter – gives a prank.

You can also determine, that we will name words that start with a certain syllable, for example: papier, parrot umbrella, pembelah, sausages, park, virgin, nail etc.

On the last letter.

And an even more difficult type of dictionary game. It consists in naming words starting with the last letter of the previous word. With this game, the child performs a thorough auditory analysis of each word, before replacing for example: doll, gooseberry, lawn, chestnut, scissors, needle etc. The way to play is the same, like the previous ones.
